Effective Presentation Skills training program
Building a convincing STORY
Duration: 1-2 days
Our corporate presentation skills training programs teaches executives and participants how to develop an outline, choose a title, organize the content, control nervousness, effectively use visual aids, handle questions and answers effectively, what to include and what not to include in the presentation. These skills will teach you to prepare a presentation to deliver your message and/or your idea in a clear, concise and convincing manner irrespective of the topic and the communication situation. The communication situation could be delivering a speech or presentation at an analyst meeting, staff meeting, conference, seminar or annual shareholders meeting of the company.
Effective Presentation Skills Program is a highly interactive 1-2 days workshop that trains your executives or sales representatives to organize and deliver presentations in an effective manner thus enhancing the image of the organization.
This program is based on a book titled "80/20 rule of Communicating Your Ideas effectively" by Avinash Narula. Avinash Narula has made a habit of turning self experience into management lessons for others through his books. Review of Avinash's presentation by the chairman of the company he worked for in U.S. in 1989 became the basis of this book. After successfully using the concept himself for a number of years, he shares this simple concept with participants in his training program with excellent results.
Objective
To assist participants in making effective presentations, internally and externally, to convince their audience (including customers) of their ideas (or buy their products).
Contents
Session 1
What is a good presentation?
A discussion on what are the elements of a good presentation will be initiated. Participants will be asked to point out some of the things that they did not liked as well as like about some presentations made by others where they were part of the audience. Such a discussion will highlight the key elements of a good presentation including what we want to focus on.
The "S" Word
"S" here stands for the word "STORY." According to Mr. Avinash Narula, lack of a proper STORY or flow is one of the major reasons why presentations are not convincing or effective. In addition, redundant or irrelevant material in the presentation makes it long and boring. We believe that while making presentations, it is very essential to not only convince/persuade but also to maintain the interest of the reader. Apart from being logical, it is very important that the presentation has the right sequence. In short, the importance of building a convincing STORY for your presentation will be discussed.
In the following sessions, how to build a good STORY and deliver it with ease will be discussed.
Second Day
Session 2
The Theme / Title
It is also essential to establish / develop a theme of the presentation to make it more effective. In fact, it is suggested that based on the theme of the presentation, the presentation should be given a name / title. This will highlight to the audience where the presenter is going and what he wants to convey to the audience.
The Structure of a Presentation
- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
One of the reasons why executives are not able to make effective presentations is that they do not follow the above structure. Understanding of the above will assist the audience to build the "STORY" effectively.
Session 3
Outlining
Most people start preparing a presentation without an outline which results in delays and lot of editing. We believe that "outlining" will make the preparation of the presentation easy and logical. It will also indicate gaps in the "STORY" or lack of information so that timely appropriate action can be taken to overcome the same.
Preparing Outline
Participants will be taught how to prepare an outline keeping the structure in mind.
Session 4
Other Issues
- Planning and preparing quality presentations.
- Preparing slides
- Presentation aids and how to use them effectively
- 3 "V" for effective delivery: Verbal, Visual, Vocal
- Knowing your audience
- Anticipating questions
- Rehearsing
Participants will be given a presentation assignment. Participants will be given 1 hour to prepare a presentation on a topic(s) agreed upon. They will have to prepare an outline on a single transparency and then make their presentation extempore with the help of this one transparency. Presentations made by the participants will be reviewed by other participants so as to learn from other people’s mistakes.
Format
The contents will have an appropriate mix of theory and practice with more emphasis on the later. The training program will be highly interactive, that is, participants will be involved in discussion. The Trainer will use examples from his own experience as a business executive and entrepreneur to illustrate and strengthen the understanding of the subject.
