80/20 Rule of
Presenting Your Ideas Effectively |
| Getting your STORY right? |
I believe that in practically every communication, written or oral, we are trying to convince the other side of our ideas. For instance, you may have the best product in town, but to sell it you need to be able to convince others that buying your product is a good idea. For instance, you may try to convince the potential customer that your product is the best for him through various means of oral and/or written communication.
Most people think what you need to present your ideas effectively is a "gift of gab" and/or a fancy set of slides. This is far from the truth. Similarly, a large number of people believe that for effective writing, you need an extensive vocabulary and an in-depth knowledge of the rules of grammar of the language in which you are writing. No wonder, most people hate writing.
Of course, these things help but what is more important is knowing and implementing the 80/20 rule of communicating your ideas effectively, that is, developing a convincing STORY. We do not realize that whenever we communicate, irrespective of the medium, we are actually telling a STORY to the other side to convince them of your ideas or convince them to do what want them to do. I feel that if you concentrate on getting your STORY right, your presentation or written report will be effective in convincing others of your ideas as well as do what you are asking them to do.
It is your STORY that is the most vital part of your presentation or writing which will convince others to adopt your ideas or buy your products and not the expensive colorful slide presentation you have made. In fact, a convincing STORY will automatically make your presentation or writing precise, convincing, of optimum length/duration, easily understandable, believable and interesting. You could end up killing a number of birds with one stone. But you need to know how to develop a convincing STORY.
What more. A convincing STORY will automatically turn you into a good speaker. If your STORY is logical with smooth flow, you will not have to memorize the presentation/speech. You will be able to speak extempore. When you don’t have to memorize, you will also not have the fear of forgetting what you have to say or the sequence of points you want to make. Your nervousness will go away. With a convincing STORY, you will speak with confidence, clarity and conviction.
This website is devoted to assisting you and others to learn how to develop an interesting and convincing STORY for your oral (formal and informal presentation, one-on-one presentation / discussion, seminar, training program) and written communication (reports, research papers, books, advertisement material).
The concept of developing a convincing STORY for effective presentations and compelling writing is based on my book titled "80/20 rule of Communicating Your Ideas effectively." I try to turn my experiences into management lessons for others through my books and writings. Review of my presentation by the chairman of the company I worked for in U.S. in 1989 became the basis of this book. After successfully using the concept myself for a number of years, I have shared this simple concept with participants in my training programs with excellent results. With the help of this website, I intend to share it with a larger audience.
